The 60 hours of classroom instruction required in 12 AAC 44.835(c)(1) must include the following topics:

1. (1) the role of a certified nurse aide, including

   1. (A) ethical standards;
   2. (B) legal issues;
   3. (C) the certified nurse aide as a member of the health care team; and
   4. (D) the client's rights and responsibilities;

2. (2) basic nursing skills, including

   1. (A) monitoring body functions;
   2. (B) taking and recording vital signs;
   3. (C) measuring and recording a client's height and weight;
   4. (D) caring for the client's environment;
   5. (E) non-invasive collection and testing of physical specimens;
   6. (F) measuring and recording fluid and food intake and output;
   7. (G) caring for a client if the client's death is imminent; and
   8. (H) postmortem care;

3. (3) personal care skills, including

   1. (A) bathing;
   2. (B) oral hygiene;
   3. (C) grooming;
   4. (D) dressing;
   5. (E) toileting;
   6. (F) assisting with eating and hydrating;
   7. (G) proper feeding techniques; and
   8. (H) skin care;

4. (4) safety concepts related to nursing, including

   1. (A) medical aseptic technique, including isolation;
   2. (B) basic life support;
   3. (C) environment;
   4. (D) body mechanics;
   5. (E) transfer and ambulation;
   6. (F) restraints and other protective devices;
   7. (G) fire and disaster;
   8. (H) food service; and
   9. (I) infection control, including standard precautions;

5. (5) communication skills, including

   1. (A) psychosocial needs of clients;
   2. (B) verbal and nonverbal communications;
   3. (C) knowledge of communication modifications for clients with limited abilities;
   4. (D) medical and nursing terminology; and
   5. (E) recording and reporting;

6. (6) hygiene and restorative nursing care, including

   1. (A) personal hygiene;
   2. (B) activities of daily living;
   3. (C) adequate nutrition and fluid intake;
   4. (D) excretory system;
   5. (E) bladder and bowel retraining; and
   6. (F) preventive maintenance and rehabilitative measures;

7. (7) human growth and development, including

   1. (A) basic needs;
   2. (B) developmental needs;

   3. (C) care of the cognitively impaired, including

      1. (i) techniques for addressing the unique needs and behaviors of an individual with dementia such as Alzheimer's or another neurodegenerative disease;
      2. (ii) communicating with a cognitively impaired individual;
      3. (iii) understanding the behavior of a cognitively impaired individual;
      4. (iv) appropriate responses to the behavior of a cognitively impaired individual; and
      5. (v) methods for reducing the effects of a cognitive impairment.
   4. (D) mental health and social service needs;
   5. (E) cultural factors;
   6. (F) sexuality;
   7. (G) process of aging; and
   8. (H) death and dying.
