The defendants were jointly tried on various charges arising out of a melee with several Lowell police officers who had responded to a reported disturbance. The defendant Jones was convicted on charges of drunkenness and possession of a harmful drug; the defendants McGuire and Hogan were found guilty of being disorderly persons and, respectively, of assault by means of a dangerous weapon and assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon. All appeal pursuant to G. L. c. 278, §§ 33A-33G. We consider each assignment argued. Rule 1:13 of the Appeals Court, 1 Mass. App. Ct. 889 (1972). 1.
