Edward Halbert, an inmate at Warren County Correctional Institution (WCCI), was placed in a cell with Kelvin Bunton, who died by strangulation after a planned fake suicide attempt in which Halbert assisted.
Halbert admitted to tying Bunton's hands and neck with bedsheets, pulling tightly until Bunton lost consciousness, and then taking further steps to ensure Bunton's lack of responsiveness.
The autopsy concluded Bunton's death was caused by strangulation and was inconsistent with suicide, indicating a homicide.
Halbert was charged and convicted by a jury for murder, felonious assault, and reckless homicide; his sentence for murder was to run consecutively to his existing sentence.
